Confraternity of Christian Doctrine - CCD
The expression CCD has become a familiar shorthand term for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, a worldwide catechetical organization whose primary goal as been the teaching apostolate. Although its origins go back to St. Charles Borromeo in the 16th century, the movement in the United States began in New York in 1902. It achieved nationwide recognition and organization in 1935, under the impetus of Bishop O'Hara, and its form and function dominated American catechetics into the 1970's.
The parish structure of the CCD was headed by the priest-director who met with and worked through the executive board of officers and division chairmen. Confraternity members were divided into teachers, fishers, helpers, parent-educators, and apostles of good will. Each member of the Confraternity program had a particular role in the proclamation of the Christian message.
The structure of the CCD has changed in our time, but the name has stayed with us. In many parishes, CCD has become a generic term for religious education outside the Catholic school.
